- Homegrown Tech Brand Actxa Launches Core Smart Ring with Non-Invasive Glucose Technology
(Media Source: Trevor Tan) If you are wearing a free fitness tracker from HPB to use with the Health 365 app, there is a high chance it is an Actxa fitness tracker. The Singapore-based deep tech company (as it called itself) will be launching its first-ever smart ring, the Core Smart Ring. Said to be crafted from aerospace-grade titanium, the Core Smart Ring features a minimalist design in two colours of black and silver. At just 8mm wide, 2.2mm thin, it tips the scales from 2.5g to 3.3g (depending on the ring size) and comes with 5ATM water resistance. The smart ring tracks your health by what Actxa described as four pillars of health – Activity, Health, Sleep and Wellness. The Core Smart Ring is available in black and silver. (Photo: Actxa Pte Ltd) However, a key highlight of the Core Smart Ring is its integration of Actxa’s proprietary BGEM® technology, which powers AI Glucose Scan to provide non-invasive glucose awareness through artificial intelligence. By making glucose-related insights more accessible through a wearable device, the technology has the potential to change how people understand and engage with their everyday health. Other features of Core Smart Ring include the usual tracking of physical activities, sleep as well as all-day SpO2, heart-rate variability (HRV), VO2 Max and stress level monitoring. It can store up to 7 days of activity data with an estimated battery life of 5 days. What you will be getting out of the box. - Actxa launches Core smart ring with BGEM non-invasive glucose detection technology
The Actxa Core will go on sale late August 2025 for S$349 (Media Source: Hardware Zone) We don’t cover Actxa often enough here. Along with another similar-sounding local brand—Axtro—they’ve traditionally provided the fitness trackers that were part of the Health Promotion Board’s National Steps Challenge programme over the years. If you’ve ever taken part, used the Healthy 365 app and collected the free fitness tracker, you’ve likely used an Actxa product before. They are lesser known outside of this, and the brand’s last product, the Spark+ Series 2 activity tracker, came out in 2023. So, it was a little surprising to see Actxa pop up in my mailbox this week with a brand new smart ring, and it actually looks like a flagship-level product, unlike the brand’s previous budget-oriented offerings. The Actxa Core smart ring features a super-sleek aerospace-grade titanium build, is ultra-sleek at just 2.2mm thin and practically feather-weight at 2.5g-3.3g (depending on ring size). You get all the usual tracking capabilities like all-day SP02 monitoring, heart rate variability (HRV) and stress, advanced sleep monitoring, and a triple temperature sensor array. What’s unique about the Core Smart Ring is the integration of Actxa’s proprietary BGEM® technology, an AI-driven, non-invasive approach that helps users gain greater awareness of their glucose patterns and how everyday habits may influence their wellbeing. It also features Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) tracking with Intensity Minutes, and supposedly recognises daily activity progression. The ring features a LiPo battery that can up to 5-days of use and 5 ATM water resistance. The Actxa Core smart ring will be priced as S$349, launching late August 2025. What's in the box
- Actxa’s BGEM®: A Non-Invasive Approach to Glucose Awareness Powered by AI
Singapore, 17 October 2024 —Actxa Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based deep tech company, introduces its BGEM technology. Powered by a cloud-based AI-driven algorithm, BGEM offers a non-invasive solution to glucose awareness, helping individuals better understand glucose-related patterns as part of their everyday health and lifestyle. Diabetes: A Growing Concern In Singapore, it is projected that by 2050, at least 1 million people will be living with diabetes, with 1 out of 4 remaining undiagnosed¹. Globally, the number of diabetic individuals is expected to reach about 643 million by 2030, with 1 in 2 adults undiagnosed². As glucose plays an important role in overall metabolic health, building greater awareness of glucose patterns can help individuals better understand how everyday factors such as meals, physical activity, sleep and other lifestyle habits may affect their bodies. A Non-Invasive Approach to Glucose Awareness BGEM leverages advanced photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors to offer a non-invasive solution. By integrating this technology into wearables, BGEM allows users to assess their diabetic risk regularly. This could support and promote early intervention, leading to better health outcomes while reducing long-term pain and cost for individuals. A joint study by Actxa and KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (“KKH”), titled “Utility of photoplethysmography in detecting elevated blood glucose among non-diabetics” and published in the Singapore Medical Journal, explored the use of PPG signals for non-invasive blood glucose detection. The study supports ongoing research into how PPG-enabled wearable technologies and digital biomarkers may contribute to greater glucose awareness. The full study can be accessed here. Clinical Validation and Global Partnerships BGEM underwent its first clinical trials in 2022, with its first scientific paper published in 2023. The technology has continued to gain attention for its potential to make glucose-related insights more accessible through non-invasive technology. Actxa continues to collaborate with research institutions and international partners to explore the broader potential of BGEM®, while advancing the development of locally created health technologies in Singapore. Alleviating Financial Strain Through Diabetes Prevention With metabolic health becoming an increasingly important part of overall wellbeing, there is growing interest in helping individuals better understand how their daily habits affect their bodies. By providing greater awareness of glucose-related patterns, BGEM® can support individuals in reflecting on everyday factors such as food choices, physical activity, sleep and recovery. These insights can help encourage more informed lifestyle choices and make glucose awareness a more practical part of everyday health management. In Singapore, the healthcare system faces significant strain due to the rising number of diabetes cases, with around $940 million spent on diabetes-related care in 2017³. Technologies that encourage greater health awareness and healthier everyday behaviours can play a role in supporting broader preventive health efforts over time. Innovating for a Healthier Future Marcus Soo, Chief Executive Officer of Actxa, said, “As a company with a vision to help people live healthier and longer lives through technology, we are dedicated to translating technological innovations into evident solutions that enhance lives. BGEM simplifies the monitoring process, allowing users to gain insights into their health regularly and non-invasively. By continuing to collaborate with partners and refine our technology, we hope to empower more individuals to manage their health proactively. The new screenless smart health band combines sleep, recovery, heart health, activity and fitness insights, alongside Actxa’s 1-minute, non-invasive glucose snapshot, with up to 14 days of battery life and no subscription required. Berlin, Germany, 3 September 2026 — Actxa today announced Spark Band at IFA Berlin 2026, introducing a new screenless smart health band designed to help people understand what their body is telling them throughout everyday life. Built for continuous day-and-night wear, Spark Band brings together insights across sleep, recovery, heart health, activity, fitness and glucose awareness in one wrist-worn device. At its centre is AI Glucose Snapshot, powered by Actxa’s proprietary BGEM® technology, introducing a 1-minute, non-invasive way for users to build greater awareness of their glucose patterns alongside the health signals they already track. “Wearables have made sleep, activity and heart health part of everyday health tracking, but one important signal has largely been missing: glucose. With Spark Band, we are bridging the gap by bringing non-invasive glucose awareness together with the signals people are already familiar with to better understand their health, all in one screenless wearable.” – Marcus Soo, Chief Executive Officer of Actxa. One Quiet Minute to Check In Powered by BGEM®, AI Glucose Snapshot offers a 1-minute, non-invasive check-in that provides an estimated glucose range together with an indicative value within that range for general wellness and awareness purposes. Users can take snapshots around meals and over time to build greater awareness of their glucose patterns and how these may relate to everyday choices. Rather than focusing on a single reading, Spark Band encourages users to check in, notice patterns over time and build a better understanding of how their body responds. No needles. No strips. One quiet minute to check in. A More Connected View of Your Health Beyond glucose awareness, Spark Band brings together everyday health and fitness insights to give users a broader understanding of how their body is doing. • AI Glucose Snapshot: One-minute, non-invasive glucose check-ins powered by BGEM®. A Quick Snapshot provides an estimate of where glucose stands at that moment, while Meal Snapshots allow users to take snapshots before and after eating to build a clearer picture of how their glucose patterns may respond to food. • Smarter Sleep Tracking: Track sleep stages, sleep score and overnight signals, with personalised insights that users can act on the following day. • Recovery Against Your Own Baseline: A daily recovery reading based on a seven-day average of sleep HRV, viewed against the user’s own baseline, alongside a 30-day trend chart and personalised recovery insights. • Activity & Fitness: Track daily movement and Intensity Minutes, alongside cardio fitness progress through workouts, VO2 Max and Fitness Age. • Target Heart Rate Zone: Gentle LED and vibration cues allow users to train smarter within their target heart-rate zone without needing to look at a screen. • Screenless Experience: Continuous health tracking with useful LED and vibration cues, keeping users informed without adding another screen to their day. • Up to 14 Days of Battery Life: Designed for continuous day-and-night wear, with up to 14 days of battery life. • No Subscription: The full Spark Band experience is available with no monthly subscription or ongoing fees. Insight Over Information Spark Band is designed to do more than collect health data. Through the Actxa App, signals across glucose, sleep, recovery, activity and fitness are brought together into simple, personal insights that help users understand what may matter most that day. Users who want to explore further can still access their detailed metrics, trends and historical data within the app. The same philosophy extends to the wrist. Instead of another display filled with notifications and numbers, Spark Band uses subtle LED and vibration cues for useful feedback, including Target Zone Training, move alerts and wake-up alarms. The idea is simple: Less data to decode, more understanding to act on. Designed to Stay With You Spark Band is designed for comfortable day-and-night wear, with zinc alloy casing and soft nylon braided strap that fits naturally into your routine. It will be available in: Casing: Titanium Silver with Jet Black accents Strap: Midnight Black Sizes: S/M and M/L At approximately 22g, Spark Band is light enough for continuous wear and is IP68-rated for everyday water resistance, including immersion up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes. - Actxa Featured in The Business Times for Its Approach to IP and Health Technology
Singapore IP Week 2025 (The Business Times, 2026) Actxa was recently featured in The Business Times in an article exploring how businesses can build stronger competitive advantages through intellectual property (IP) in an AI-driven economy. The feature brings together perspectives from Tan Kong Hwee, Chief Executive of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), and Dr. Du Yao, Chief Scientist at Actxa, highlighting how a strategic approach to IP can help protect innovation, support growth and create value that is difficult to replicate. Why IP Matters in Health Technology As AI makes innovation faster and easier to replicate, Tan Kong Hwee highlighted the growing importance of protecting the technology, data, processes and knowledge that give companies their competitive advantage. For health technology companies like Actxa, this goes beyond the physical wearable. Whether it is a smart ring for health tracking or sleep tracking, much of the value comes from the science and algorithms working behind the scenes to turn physiological signals into meaningful health insights. As Dr. Du Yao shared with The Business Times, Actxa built IP discipline directly into its R&D process from an early stage, protecting not only its brands but also its proprietary algorithms, methods and data. More Than a Smart Ring Health Tracker Growing interest in wearables as health tracker reflects a broader shift towards understanding health more proactively. Actxa's Core Smart Ring brings together sleep, activity and cardiovascular health insights within a screenless wearable, with no subscription required. It also introduces AI Glucose Scan, powered by Actxa's proprietary BGEM® technology, extending wearable health tracking into everyday and non-invasive glucose awareness without finger pricks or test strips. Behind these experiences are years of research, proprietary algorithms and clinical data that form part of Actxa's wider intellectual property foundation. Protecting the Science Behind Actxa's BGEM® The Business Times feature highlights BGEM® as an example of how Actxa's competitive advantage extends beyond conventional patents and trademarks. This includes Actxa's BGEM® algorithms, proprietary database of digital biomarkers, clinical datasets and accumulated scientific know-how. Dr. Du Yao explained that this combination of proprietary clinical data, digital biomarkers and scientific expertise is what makes BGEM® difficult to reproduce. It also demonstrates why protecting intangible assets is increasingly important as technologies such as AI become more capable. As Tan Kong Hwee noted, these less-visible assets can be what truly differentiate one company from another and provide a foundation for partnerships, investment and international growth. Building What's Next in Preventive Health As Actxa continues to develop new health technologies and expand into new markets, a strong IP foundation helps us protect what we have built while giving our teams room to continue innovating. Being featured in The Business Times reflects an important part of this journey: combining strong science, proprietary technology and meaningful health insights to build technology designed for the future of preventive health. - Actxa Core Smart Ring Featured On Fox News For AI Glucose Scan Technology
Diabetes is increasing worldwide, and the need for earlier, simpler glucose awareness has never been more important. Actxa's Core Smart Ring was recently featured on Fox News, where senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel discussed the release of Actxa's Core Smart Ring as a new AI-powered wearable for non-invasive glucose monitoring. The segment highlighted how the ring senses blood flow and pulse, using machine learning to detect elevated blood sugar, while also pointing the growing important of lifestyle awareness as global diabetes cases continue to rise. Why Glucose Awareness Matters More Than Ever The global rise in diabetes makes glucose awareness more relevant not only for people living with diabetes, but also those focused on preventive wellness, pre-diabetes risk, lifestyle habits and long-term health. For many people, glucose is still one of the least visible signals in daily wellness. Sleep, activity and heart rate are commonly tracked by wearables, but glocose has traditionally been associated with finger pricks, blood tests or dedicated monitoring devices. That is where the next shift in wearable health technology begins. What is AI Glucose Scan? AI Glucose Scan is a clinically backed, non-invasive feature designed to support glucose awareness from the finger. Instead of requiring needles or test strips, AI Glucose Scan uses photoplethysmography (PPG) sensors to capture blood-flow waveform, which are analysed to support non-invasive assessment of elevated blood glucose status. This is especially relevant for people who want to be more proactive about their metabolic health, including those who are paying closer attention to insulin response, dietary patterns, post-meal habits and daily energy levels. How AI and PPG Are Changing Wearable PPG is an optical sensing method that uses light to detect blood volume changes in tissue. It is readily available in wearable and clinical devices for health-related signals such as heart rate and oxygen saturation. With Actxa's proprietary BGEM® technology, Core Smart Ring analyses full PPG signals to identify more complex patterns within the body's optical and blood-flow data. This supports a more accessible approach to glucose awareness, helping users understand when their glucose status may be normal or elevated. While traditional glucose monitoring remains important for medical care, glucose visibility is no longer only relevant to diabetes management. As more health-conscious individuals explore Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) to better understand their metabolic response, Actxa's technology supports this growing shift with a more accessible, non-invasive and lower-cost way to begin building glucose awareness in everyday life. A New Era of Everyday Glucose Awareness Being featured on Fox News marks an important moment for Actxa and for the future of accessible wellness technology. Glucose awareness is no longer about occasional checks. It is becoming part of everyday health conversations, especially as diabetes continues to rise globally and more people look for simple ways to understand their body better. We aim to make glucose awareness more approachable, less invasive and easier to integrate into daily life. The future of wellness is not just about tracking more data. It is about making the signals that matter easier to understand.
- Small Habits, Real Science. What Actually Moves the Needle on Blood Sugar
Understanding Glucose | Part 2 of 3 You probably already know the usual advice. Eat better. Move more. Sleep well. Cut back on sugar. And while none of that is wrong, it often feels too broad to be useful. Blood sugar is not only shaped by the big decisions such as the diet plan, the workout routine, or the annual health check. It is also shaped by the small moments that happen every day: what you do after lunch, the order you eat your meal, how your body handles stress, and whether your sleep gave your metabolism enough time to reset. In Part 1, we've looked at 3pm crash, what blood sugar does in the body, the different form of diabetes, and why awareness matters even if you feel fine. Now, we move from awareness to simple actions. Not with extreme changes. Not with fear. Not with another generic wellness checklist. But with specific, science-backed habits that can meaningfully influence how your body responds to glucose. Because the goal is not just to think about blood sugar levels in general. It is to understand the spikes. Why General Health Advice Falls Short Most advice Is Directionally Right, but Practically Vague "Eat well" is not a bad advice. Neither is "Exercise more". But these phrases leave out the details that matter. Your body responds to timing, sequences, stress, sleep, and context. That is why two people can eat the same meal and have very different glucose responses. The goal is not to chase perfection. It is to understand which small actions can create a measurable difference. Blood Sugar Is Moment-Sensitive Blood sugar changes throughout the day. It rises after meals. It shifts with movement. It can also be affected by poor sleep, stress, illness, alcohol, hydration, and hormones. But one window matters more than most people realise. The 1-2 hours after eating. This is when: Glucose enters your bloodstream Insulin responds to help move glucose into your cells Your body decides how to use or store that energy. Small actions during this window can change the shape of your glucose response. Not months later. Not in theory. In that moment. That is where most practical habits begin. Habit 1: Eat Fibre and Protein Before Carbohydrates The Same Meal Can Create a Different Response Most people assume blood sugar is only influenced by what is on the plate. But the order you eat that plate can change how your body experiences the meal. The same food can lead to a sharper or smoother glucose results depending on the sequence they are being digested. This is one of the simplest habits because it does not require removing anything. You are not cutting out rice. You are not banning bread. You are not turning every meal into a rulebook. You are changing the order on what to eat first based on your meal. A Subtle Shift in Sequence Try this structure: Fibre first. (Vegetables, Salad, Greens, Beans, Lentils) Protein and/or fats next (Egg, Fish, Chicken, Tofu, Yoghurt, Nuts, Avocado, Olive Oil) Carbohydrates last (Rice, Noodles, Breads, Potatoes) This structure helps slow the speed at which glucose enters the bloodstream. It is a small shift with big impact on what actually moves the needle. It is becoming more aware and the question should shift from "is this meal good or bad?" to "how can I help my body handle this meal better?" The key is not about restriction. It is about creating a slower steadier release of energy. What Actually Happens Inside When You Change the Sequence First, fibre slows down how quickly food moves through your system. It creates a kind of buffer so glucose enters your bloodstream more gradually. Then comes protein and fats which further slowdown digestion therefore reducing the speed at which carbohydrates are broken down. Lastly, when carbohydrates finally arrive, they don't hit your system all at once. They're absorbed in a way your body can keep up with. Habit 2: The 10-Minute Walk That Intercepts the Spike It's Not About Exercise. It's About Timing Most people treat walking or exercising as a separate event like a morning workout, gym session or evening run. Those are valuable. But when it comes to blood sugar, timing can be just as important as effort. A short, gentle walk after a meal, especially within 20 to 30 mins, can help reduce the size of post-meal glucose spike. No need to change clothes. No need to "workout". No need to sweat. Just have a simple walk for about 15-30 minutes after your meal. What Happens Inside Your Body (Whether You Notice It or Not) After you eat, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose and enter your bloodstream. Your body releases insulin to move that glucose into your cells. But your muscles can also use glucose when they are active. During the simple walk, your muscles begin drawing glucose from the blood to use as energy. You can think of it as a direct outlet. Instead of glucose rising sharply and waiting to be managed, the movement made during the simple walk gives your body somewhere to send it immediately. Your muscles don't wait for the perfect conditions. They take what's available. Why These Small Habits Matter More Than They Seem Small Habits Work Because They Meet the Body in Real Time The most effective habits are not always the most dramatic. The two habits doesn't sound revolutionary on their own. But they work because they meet the body where blood sugar is actually shaped, in daily patterns repeated over time. However, your body is not a formula. The same meal can feel different on different days. The same walk may help more after lunch than after dinner. It is not a failure, it is biology. Which raises a more useful question: How much of your health are you still trying to understand through guesswork? The Signals Usually Arrive Late Right now, most of us rely on how we feel. Our energy, hunger, focus, and cravings. These are not early signals. They are often the aftermath. By the time you feel the dip in energy, the subsequent spike may have already happened. By the time you reach for another coffee or snack, your body may already be compensating for a pattern that began hours earlier. This is what makes blood sugar difficult to understand from feeling alone. Your body may be communicating clearly, just not in a language you can fully see yet. What Comes Next? Once you start changing your habits, the next question becomes: What's actually changing inside me? That is where health tracking begins to matter. Not as another score to chase, but as a way to understand the gap between what you do, how you feel, and how your body responds. The most powerful shift is not just building better habits. It is seeing whether those habits are working for you. In part 3, we move from action to insight: how glucose tracking has evolved and why seeing your body's response may change everything about how we understand health and wellness tracking. Read more!
- Next-Generation Glucose Awareness: From Invasive Checks To Everyday Insights
Understanding Glucose | Part 3 of 3 In Part 1, we explored what glucose is, why it matters, and why blood sugar awareness is becoming an important part of everyday health. In Part 2, we looked at small, science-backed habits that can help support healthier glucose patterns, from walking after meals to changing the order in which we eat. But there is one question left: How do you know what is actually happening inside your body? Healthy habits matter, but the body does not always respond in ways we can immediately feel. A meal that feels fine in the moment may still affect your glucose response. A short walk may help, but the effect can vary from person to person. A good night's sleep, a stressful day, or even the timing of your meal can all influence how your body responds. That is where the next generation of glucose awareness begins. Not just with advice but visibility. The Missing Piece: Visibility Most people only notice their body's signals when they become obvious. The afternoon crash, sudden cravings, feeling of being tired, hungry, or "off". But these are often delayed signals. By the time you feel the dip, the glucose pattern may have already started. A spike may have happened earlier, and your body may already be compensating. What feels like a random energy crash may actually be the result of something that began hours before. This is what makes glucose difficult to understand from feeling alone. Even when you start building healthier habits, such as walking after meals, eating fibre first, or sleeping better, you may still wonder whether those habits are actually working for you. The common misconception is that if you do not feel it, it is not happening. But glucose patterns can be quiet. They can happen in the background. Without visibility, many people are left guessing. Traditional glucose checks can offer valuable information, but they often capture only one moment in time. Everyday glucose awareness helps connect that reading to the wider rhythm of how you eat, move, sleep, recover and respond to stress. For many people, glucose awareness still feels out of reach. The common barrier are familiar. Glucose is not only a number that appear during a health screening. It is a part of your everyday rhythm, influenced by how you eat, move, sleep, recover, and respond to stress. To understand it better, glucose awareness needs to become easier to access, easier to repeat, and easier to understand. The Evolution Of Glucose Awareness; How AI Changes The Experience The future of glucose awareness is not simply about collecting more data. It is about making that data more useful in everyday life. What if glucose awareness could become less invasive? What if it could be accessed more easily? What if it could offer clearer signals instead of overwhelming numbers? What if it could support preventive wellness, rather than only being considered when something already feels wrong? This is the shift from glucose testing as an occasional clinical moment to glucose awareness as part of daily life. It is a shift from invasive to non-invasive, from occasional snapshots to everyday checks, from complex data to clearer interpretation, and from reactive health to earlier awareness. This approach does not replace medical testing or professional advice. Those remain important. But for everyday wellness, there is a growing need for tools that help people understand their body earlier, more easily, and in context. This is where AI changes the experience. Our bodies generate signals every day. These signals are complex. On their own, they can feel like separate pieces of information. But when studied together, patterns can begin to emerge. AI Glucose Scan then help translate these complex signals into clearer outputs. It will then simplify data so people do not need to interpret everything on their own. Because, health data is only useful when people can understand what it means. With AI Glucose Scan, it introduces a propriety, clinically studied approach to non-invasive glucose awareness. The goal is not to turn people into medical experts. It is to make glucose awareness easier to begin. It is a simplier way to start noticing glucose. Why Glucose Should Be Seen In Context Wearable technology has made it easier to track everyday health signals such as sleep, steps, heart rate, blood oxygen, activity, and recovery. These signals are useful, but they do not tell the full story. Glucose has often been the missing signal in wellness tracking not because it is less important, but because it has traditionally been harder to measure in a simple, non-invasive and accessible way. Most wearables can show how your body moves, rests, and recover. But without glucose awareness, there is still a gap in understanding how your body responds to food, daily rountines and metabolic demand. This is why glucose becomes more meaningful when seen in context. Not everyone reponds the same way to the same meal. Not every habit works the same way for everybody. Not every signal is obvious when it first appears. What This Means For Preventive Wellness The next generation of wellness should not only be advanced. It should be accessible. It should be understandable. It should be part of everyday life. We've normalised needles, patches, and lab visits - just to tell people something they could have changed earlier. Our wearables are proving a different point: when people see their health, they stop sabotaging it. - Dr. Du Yao Preventive wellness is not about fear. It is about giving people better tools to understand their body and make healthier choices before health becomes a concern. When glucose awareness becomes easier to access, easier to understand, and easier to fit into everyday life, health becomes less about guessing and more about knowing where to begin. That is when wearables become more than devices, and everyday signals become insights people can actually use and get useful information on.
